India won the SAFF Championship 2023 after edging Kuwait 5-4 on penalties in the championship game.
India was the host country for SAFF 2023.
The event had eight teams in two groups. Group A includes hosts India, Kuwait, Nepal, and Pakistan. Group B has four teams: Bangladesh, Bhutan Lebanon Maldives.
India won the trophy after a strong group stage with four victories and one draw to eventual finalists Kuwait. After a 1-1 final draw, they won their second consecutive shootout. India won their seventh SAFF Championship title and a medal after successfully defending it.
India won the penalty shootout 4-2 on penalties shootout in India vs Lebanon. In another match between Kuwait vs Bangladesh, Kuwait won 1-0.
Indian captain Sunil Chhetri became the best player in the match. With a 5-4 penalty shootout, India won against Kuwait. The creed started to cheer "Vande Mataram" during the final moments, which was enthralling for Indians.
Both Golden Boots go to Sunil Chhetri. Key figures in this effort included Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Sunil Chhetri, and Mahesh Singh.
