The worry? RR have looked inconsistent. Yes, they beat LSG recently to keep themselves in the driver’s seat, but they’ve also dropped games they shouldn’t have. The key player here is Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, if the 15-year-old phenom fires at the top of the order against MI, RR should have no trouble putting up a big score. But RR can’t afford to be complacent. MI have nothing to lose, which sometimes makes them the most dangerous opponent.

Qualification odds: 75%, Very likely, but need to actually turn up and win.

Personally? I think RR are going through. Sooryavanshi against an eliminated MI side feels like batting practice. I’d be shocked if Rajasthan don’t post 200+ and seal it before the 15th over.

2. Punjab Kings — One Win Away, But Dependent on Others

PBKS have 13 points and one match left, against Lucknow Super Giants on May 23. A win takes them to 15 points. But here’s the catch: if RR also win, PBKS can’t go through even at 15 points. They need RR to lose to MI on May 24.

The good news? PBKS have the better NRR at +0.227 compared to almost everyone else in the fight. If there’s a tie on 15 points with KKR, Punjab’s superior NRR puts them through. Six consecutive defeats had written them off, but they clawed back. Now one win might be enough, or it might not.

Qualification odds: 45%, Win their game, then pray.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders — Long Shot But Very Much Alive

KKR are on 11 points from 12 games, they need to win both remaining games (vs MI on May 22, which has just been reported as a KKR win, and vs DC on May 24) to reach 15 points. KKR have already ticked off their first task, they beat Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets on May 20, chasing down 148 in what was a surprisingly tense finish. On top of that, they need RR to lose and either PBKS to also lose, or PBKS to win but by a margin small enough that KKR’s NRR overtakes them.

KKR’s 4-wicket win over MI, chasing 148 with nerves jangling, broke Twitter. ‘KKR always finds a way to give you a heart attack even while winning’ was basically the national consensus. Eden Gardens fans, meanwhile, were just relieved.

Five wins in their last six matches before the final two games had kept KKR alive, and their win over MI was crucial. Credit to KKR for not giving up, this is a team that knows how to peak at the right time. But they need the stars to align. A big win over DC in the final game could be the NRR boost that tips the balance.

4. Chennai Super Kings – Not Happening

CSK can get to 14 points max. For that to matter, they need PBKS and RR both to lose, plus KKR to stay under 13 points. And even if all that somehow happens, CSK’s NRR is only 0.043 better than RR’s – so one bad over could kill them anyway. GT’s 229/4 on May 21 pretty much shut the door. CSK chased 140/10 in response. That’s not a defeat, that’s a statement.

Look, CSK fans will hold out hope because that’s what CSK fans do. But this one’s done.

Dark Horse: Delhi Capitals

DC need to beat KKR by a massive margin AND have about four other things go wrong for everyone else. Their NRR is -0.871. It’s not happening. Quietly awful season from them.

If he gets going against MI on May 24, RR’s job is basically done inside the powerplay.

Virat Kohli – Still Him

This is the one everyone’s watching. RR just need to win – straightforward on paper. MI are already out, so there’s no pressure on them, which is actually the slightly annoying part. Eliminated teams can be weirdly dangerous because they’re just playing loose. But honestly, if Sooryavanshi gets going in the first six overs, this match is over before most people finish their chai. RR go to 16 points and nothing else matters.

If RR somehow lose though? Chaos. PBKS and KKR both get a lifeline and May 24 night becomes very interesting.

Match 2 (7:30 PM IST): Kolkata Knight Riders vs Delhi Capitals

Only really matters if RR slip up. KKR need a big win here – not just any win, a proper thrashing – to make the NRR argument against PBKS. DC have nothing riding on this game, so who knows how they’ll show up. Could go either way. KKR will be hoping DC just don’t turn up.
